Leadership Development Strategy

The Stanford Educational Leadership Institute has made great strides in bridging knowledge about management and organizational redesign.  SELI’s three-pronged strategy to address these areas of educational leadership has consistently incorporated elements of teaching, outreach, and research.  These linkages have resulted in the re-examination of how individual stakeholders and their organizations can build the leadership capacity and common vision necessary to support and improve student learning.

First, we are committed to providing educational opportunities designed for school leaders who are involved in designing or redesigning school organizations, especially in communities serving large proportions of low-income students and students of color.  By bringing together faculty from both the business and education schools as well as leading experts in education systemic reform, SELI continues to provide an innovative and practical curriculum that demonstrated how business and education principles could indeed work together.

Second, through the development of innovative curricula and teaching materials, we have created a new paradigm for training educational leaders using case studies, team building and planning, and interactive coaching sessions.  As platforms for discussion, the materials provide examples of district-level effort to restructure systems to foster higher student achievement.

Third, as a part of a world renowned research institution, SELI is collaborating with Stanford researchers and external partners to study the design elements, and best practices for the professional development of educational leaders.  Studies are currently examining the institutional and funding infrastructure that supports and constrains these programs and identifying the features of school and district models, change processes, and characteristics of successful leaders will help to facilitate the creation of more effective education organizations.
