Mission and Background
From its conception, SELI has refined and sharpened its vision to focus on supporting educational leaders in their efforts to enhance the quality of teaching and learning in their schools and districts. The Institute has also been shaped by a unique emphasis on ensuring equitable educational outcomes. We believe that by equipping educational leaders with innovative ideas and tools that SELI can change the way they think about and carry out their work.
Our purpose in integrating the knowledge and resources of the Stanford University School of Education (SUSE) and Stanford Graduate School of Business (GSB) has been to:
- Support the professional development of current and emerging K-12 educational leaders in understanding and applying proven organizational theory and management principles to the creation of high-performing schools.
- Develop and disseminate innovative teaching materials and pedagogies for educational leadership programs and school leaders involved with school redesign.
- Generate research-based knowledge that can inform the design of structures, systems, and practices that can dramatically improve the efficacy of schools.
By examining the critical aspects of effective leadership, SELI has been able to offer recommendations to practitioners, scholars, philanthropists, businesses, and policy-makers on strategies to increase the impact of teaching and learning.
